Zebra Tutorial by Sandy

Zebra

The above frame was made from a tutorial by Carla ... see http://chadogroup.com/carla/elegant_frame/

This is my first tutorial so please try to work with your fingers crossed:^) The tutorial was made in PSP V 7.04 using selections which you can download here. Create a new folder for projects, name it zebra and unzip the selections to your project folder. Remember to Save often as you are working and save the file in PSP format.

There are only 2 colors used which are: #5C2C16 and #EFEFDB. See the color swatches below:

Color Swatch

STEP 1: Open a new image, 525 x 400 with a transparent background and 16 million colors. Add a new Raster Lawyer, name it "body". Add the body.sel and flood fill with #EFEFDB, deselect.

STEP 2: Add a new raster layer, name it "inside front leg1". Load from disk the insidefrontleg1.sel and flood fill with #EFEFDB. Deselect.

STEP 3: Add a new raster layer, name it "outside front leg2". Load from disk the outsidefrontleg2.sel and flood fill with #EFEFDB. Deselect.

STEP 4: Add a new raster layer, name it "inside back leg3". Load from disk the insidebackleg3.sel and flood fill with #EFEFDB. Deselect.

STEP 5: Add a new raster layer, name it "outside back leg4". Load from disk the outsidebackleg3.sel and flood fill with #EFEFDB. Deselect.

STEP 6: Use you Retouch Tool, set to Darken RGB, size 7, hardness 28, opacity 41, step 25 and density 25. Darken the areas using the model below. Use the retouch tool to smudge and soften to your preferences.

STEP 7: On your layer pallet select the "inside front leg1" layer and load from disk the "stripesleg1.sel" Flood fill with #EFEFDB. Deselect. Use your retouch tool, smudge, set to size 11, hardness 33, opacity 35, step 25 and density36... and smudge the large brown spot towards his chest. Soften to your preference.

STEP 8: Go to your layer pallet and select "outside front leg2" layer and load from disk the "stripesleg2.sel". Flood fill with #5C2C16 and deselect.

STEP 9: Go to your layer pallet and select "inside back leg3" layer and load from disk the "stripesleg3.sel"Flood fill with #5C2C16. Deselect. Use your retouch tool, smudge, set to size 11, hardness 33, opacity 35, step 25 and density36... and smudge the 2 large brown spot towards his outer leg. Soften to your preference.

STEP 10: Go to your layer pallet and select "outside back leg4" layer. On your layer pallet " unlock" the layer by clicking on the lock that has the red X. The reason for this is that the selection slightly overlaps the leg and when you unlock the layer it will not flood fill outside the leg. Load from disk the "stripesleg4.sel"Flood fill with #5C2C16, deselect.

At this point you should have the outline of the body, legs and stripes on the legs like the image below:

STEP 11: Go to you pull down menu, select Layers, Merge and Merge all visable. Rename the new merged layer to "Body".

STEP 12: On the new Body Layer "lock" making sure the red X is removed from the padlock. Load from disk the bodyhead_stripes.sel. . Flood fill with #5C2C16and deselect. Go back to the layer pallet and click on the padlock again to place the red X back on the lock.

Take a break so you can uncross your fingers and relax a bit. When you are ready move on to page 2 for the finishing touches to your Zebra.
